Joy Irene Slagle Long

Joy Irene Slagle Long, 97, of Concordia at Cabot, PA formerly of West Kittanning, PA, passed away on Sunday, November 17, 2024 at Armstrong County Memorial Hospital in Kittanning, PA.

She was born June 21, 1927 in Bridgeburg, Armstrong Co., PA, to William McClelland Montgomery and Elnora (Tarr) Montgomery.

Joy lived in the area all her life and worked in the accounting departments for both the Pittsburg & Shawmut Railroad Company and A.R.I.N. She was a past member of the Kit-han-nee Questors and a member of the Kittanning First United Methodist Church. Joy was an avid reader and a life member of the Armstrong County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. Joy's family and friends will always remember her kind spirit and she will be best remembered for being a wonderful mother.

As a beloved wife and mother, Joy exemplified the Christ-like attributes of sacrifice and service. She leaves behind for generations of her family a legacy of unfailing love and faith. Her fiends so appreciated her sweet spirit, king words, and generous outreach.

Left behind to cherish her memory is her son, Gary N. Slagle, of Kittanning; daughters, Cynthia Joy Zalar and husband Anthony, of Charlottesville, VA, and Candace Glee Hernley and husband Dale, of Spring Church; step-sons, William F. Long, Jr. and wife Patti, of Bonita Springs, FL, and James D. Long and wife Elaine, of Kittanning; grandchildren, Robert Slagle and wife Heather, Matthew Zalar and wife Audrey, Zachary Zalar and wife Meghan, Jennifer Pleunik and husband Ben, Julie Fennell and husband John, Kevin Hernley and wife Kris, Keith Hernley, Sarah Long and husband Miquel Camelo, Dr. Jessica Wilson and husband Julien, Jason Long, M.D. and wife Jessica, and Brandon Long and wife Courtney; great-grandchildren, Ethan and Logan Slagle, Clara Joy Zalar, Colton and Declan Hernley, Hannah Joy and Marin Pleunik, Ian, Colin and Jameson Fennell, Lydia, Cooper and Garrett Long; sister, Rose Montgomery; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; first husband, Robert N. Slagle, Jr., whom she married on Nov. 10, 1951 and who died in May of 1965; second husband, William F. Long, Sr., whom she married March 29, 1969 and who died in January of 2000; and siblings, Harvey Montgomery, Jacob Montgomery, Clair Montgomery, Glee Duncan, Gladys Neurohr, Thomas Montgomery, Janet Montgomery, and Roy Montgomery.

The family will receive friends from 1PM on Saturday, November 23, 2024 until the time of the funeral service at 2PM at the Kittanning First United Methodist Church, 301 N. Jefferson St., Kittanning, with the Rev. Dayton D. Mix officiating.

Interment will be at Kittanning Cemetery, Kittanning, PA.
